Translation mistakes are frequent. They often result from a non-professional translation or from an automatic translation.
Here are some examples of translation gems that can be found on the Internet :

  • Scandinavian vacuum manufacturer Electrolux used the following slogan in an American ad campaign: "Nothing sucks like an Electrolux."
  • In Taiwan, the translation of the Pepsi slogan "Come alive with the Pepsi Generation" came out as "Pepsi will bring your ancestors back from the dead."
  • In the Hong Kong South China Morning Post: "Restaurant Assistant Manager: Applicants with the necessary experience need not apply. Please fax resume to Rita on 2865 1909 -- help wanted".
  • In a Japanese hotel: "depositing the room key into another person is prohibited".
  • On a traffic sign in Tokyo: "car will not have intercourse on this bridge".
  • In a Bucharest hotel lobby: "the lift is being fixed for the next day. During that time we regret that you will be unbearable".
  • Two signs from a Majorcan shop entrance: "English well talking. - Here speeching American".
